It was actually decided sometime many decades ago that the name would be changed back to Nidaros, in line with restoring Norwegian cultural heritage, but the population protested against it for whatever reason.

Orderliness in gothic architecture is generally a good thing though. Early gothic tends to be way too detailed and somewhat chaotic. In later gothic a more holistic design usually implemented and results in a nicer aesthetic.

Well, the Nidaros Cathedral was technically pretty early, starting construction already in AD 1080. Despite much of its current facade being rebuilt as a result of numerous accidents throughout history, it should look pretty close to what it did back in its medieval heyday. Stavanger Cathedral and St Magnus Cathedral are good indicators of this, being built as small-scale Nidaros Cathedrals. I think the "messiness" in Gothic architecture was actually a thing that came later on, if you look at places like Edinburgh for example.

Depends on what want to do. There's definitely some cozy towns worth visiting for their comfiness. A lot o them have these old parts full of wooden houses.
If you want to actually do something Turku and Tampere are also worth considering. And maybe Oulu.

I want to do a trip through scandinavia next winter, that's why I ask. I plan to stay most of the time in sweden, but also want to see a bit of norway and finland.
It would be great to see some old architecture, are there some towns with an outstanding oldtown? Turku looks good, I think I'll put it on my list.

Suomenlinna seems to be awesome, thanks for the advise! I'll definitly check it out.

Barcelona has a spooky vibe to it. I love it. Almost alien. The sagrada familia being the obvious centrepiece to the spirit.
I'd hope that they'd focus on that vibe for future architecture projects, but the modernists would probably rather do their own bland thing.

It reminds me of the art nouveau in central Europe, slightly.
>>
>>52721316
I kind of like some Swedish ones, like the one in Skara, but Nidaros wins purely by being something you wouldn't expect finding in the Nordics.

>>52721388
What are you on about? Nidaros Cathedral is one of the oldest in Scandinavia, especially taking into account when it started construction, and it's also by an incredibly long shot the most grandiose of its time.

It started construction in 1080 and was finished in 1300. It burnt down numerous times afterwards in history, and since we were cucked by Danes, we could never afford a full reconstruction until after independence. Still, the cathedral today uses every possible source and indication of its time as to what it once looked like, mainly in its front facade (as that was the most damaged). It looked like shit because it was always built up again cheaply, but the original walls are still there (see pic).
Here's also a nice video from NTNU of what Trondheim most likely looked like in 1300, with the only real difference of the cathedral being that it had two addition spires.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIuFrQUMe3M

Nidaros isn't the only cathedral either from its period to undergo major changes and reconstruction. It's a given that something goes wrong with 700 years under your belt.

Joke's on us, Dresden has been mostly restored or redeveloped and is pretty these days.

The cities Germany bombed in the UK were just abandoned and filled with pakis and concrete monstrosities.
Only very recently have we started knocking down the grey buildings and redeveloping some areas.

Harrogate is nice.
A few ugly modernist behemoths ruin the centre though.
>>
>>52724935
Yep.
Modernists seem to think: the bigger something is, the more ugly it should be.

Luckily urbanism is gaining momentum amongst a lot of architects, so hopefully we'll at least see some better city planning in the future. Stylistically we're still stuck with modernism though. It's the worst mistake in modern history imo.

New urbanists are the best.
The general idea of "mixed use" developments is gaining popularity indeed, fortunately.
I am not an environmentalist, but I am thankful that the worries over pollution are enticing developers to make more "walkable cities" rather than having a boring industrial-estate type city centre surrounded by suburbs.

Uppsala cathedral isn't really all that much, though. Brick churches from the 19th century are incredibly common all over Scandinavia, with Uppsala's just being larger than the others. Also, it calling it tiny in comparison is very wrong. Nidarosdomen is 102m long, 98m tall, while Uppsala domkyrka is 119m on both.

Both seem pretty cool. I'll likely see Uppsala in the spring.
Turku cathedral is the closest thing we've got. Its exterior is weird, but the interior is okay, I guess. Nothing compared to those two though, nor to any other continental cathedrals.

Nice. Turku Cathedral reminds me a bit of the old Bergen churches/Oslo's cathedral, except much larger. Anywho, I really like this one in Helsinki. It's one of the nicer double-spired churches I know of, at least in the Nordics.

I just passed last week in Dordogne actually, my uncle has a house there
I 100% agree it's pretty based, nothing impressive like huge mountains, canyons etc but comfy as fuck, and full of monuments. You can't drive 5mn without finding a castle, a beautiful church, a cave, medieval town etc
The pics I posted are from Sarlat, pic related (which I didn't take, this time)
