We get many German tourists, though not many live here. The Xhosa tribes and Khoi San were there when the first settlers came, along with the Zulu in the north if the country, though as much as there are today. If there are still tribes in Tanzania it isn't a major part of everyday life here.

Zanzibar was a Arab run sultanate. Tanganyika was first a German colony, then after Germany's defeat in WWI it became a British protectorate.
Tanganyika was granted independence from Britain in 1961. The Africans on Zanzibar staged a violent uprising against their Arab overlords in 1963, kicking out the Sultan who fucked off to Oman.
The socialist president of Tanganyika, Julius Nyerere, proposed a union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar in the months following the revolution. Unionisation happened in '62, forming what is today Tanzania.

Mostly right, only Zanzibar was run out of Oman itself. I know at a stage they wanted to take it as far as making Zanzibar the capital of Oman, though it fizzled out after the revolution.
To be honest I think the Britain just decided to leave this shit hole, it has no natural resources. It used to be a hub for spice and slave trading, but as both of those died out it became irrelevant and useless. The only thing Zanzibar has going for itself now is tourism, though the government (which operates separately form Tanzania) refuses to admit it.
Fun fact the shortest war in history was fought here. The British showed up with a naval fleet and shot the Omani to shit for about 40 minutes before they surrendered.
