You know, prison is actually what causes a lot of people with very small charges to get into the bigger stuff. Once you get that felony for having a few grams of marijuana on you, getting a job becomes extremely difficult and turning to crime to make ends meet isn't uncommon in that situation. Plus, being in prison can often lead to being indoctrinated into the thug cultures and all that.
As odd as the Scandinavian "luxury" prisons may seem, they really do work to reduce crime.

Right now, black in the US get in jail over trivialities and they get in there very young.
Of course when you did 5 years for stealing a radio in a car at 17 and have no qualifications whatsover, you are going to do that shit again because you don't know any better. That's why you need to be measured and smart about how you choose to hand out sentences.
It is not about being laxist, a crime is a crime and should be punished. But also try to work to not make that a death sentence in practice
