I'm not from California. I honestly hate San Francisco more than any other city I've lived in/near in my entire life. Los Angeles is second on my shitlist.
The only reason I'm here is because the engineering jobs are great. I make $150,000/year base salary + I do consulting work on the side for other people I know (and people they know) who are starting companies.
As soon as I've banked enough, I'm leaving here and never coming back.

Lots of Americans moved from the east coast and midwest to California in the 1960s. The tech/computer boom happened.
Since the 1990s, however, companies have left California because it's managed terribly. Additionally, it's flooded with illegal immigrants that no one wants. It has no water, and the drought has ruined it. Communities are segregated and a box of an apartment easily costs $3000/month. It's the definition of a bloated state.
Since the early 2000s the tech industry has moved to Florida, Texas, and Washington state. I hope this trend continues and California becomes irrelevant because it's safer for the US tech industry to be distributed across 3-4 hubs. Not that I live in any of those states, though
