My gf's parents literally have no idea what country their ancestors cane from before they cane to America, it's quite common and very sad.

why is a tougher question, I guess part of it is because canada is a younger country overall, and has a more varied culture of immigration, even to rural areas (eg. chinese people building the railroad, ukrainians going to the prairies to farm, etc.)
