There were plans for it, but after Ukraine Likashenko suddenly became more nationlistic. Even told a speech in belarusian

Won't Zmagars take over then? And associate themselves with EU/West...

Why he should?

Isn't it a buffer state?

Because of their demographic trends, Russia will need to make some aggressive moves relatively soon (or not at all). Russia needs to expand westward to the strategic, mountain range bottle-necks. Their army will never be as big as it is now, and the mountain ranges will allow Russia to defend their new western borders with even fewer troops.

Buffer states are good to prevent accidental engagements between troops on the border. Germany moving through Belgium shows that border states aren't good for much else. If buffer states were more valuable than stationing your own troops on the border of a strong enemy, China would want a (diminished) independent Tibet between them and India.

>Russia needs to expand westward to the strategic, mountain range bottle-necks.
But that would have to include invading Poland to secure Polish gap. Not going to happen with NATO 2bh.

The purpose of NATO was to win the cold war. The cold war is over. NATO is obsolete. Has NATO ever been tested in the last 25 years? Never tested by a large power. Wars in Afghanistan and Bosnia don't really count.
7-13% of US GDP is import/exports (lower than almost any other developed country, Germany is ~45%, UK ~30%). Half of that trade is with Canada and Mexico. Nowadays, US Global military involvement is primarily for ideological reasons. If the US defends Poland from Russia, it will be for ideological reasons, not for US self-interest.

There's no absolute need for that, Putin respects the sovereignty of a nation that does not goes against Russia.

Westboo "Nationalists". You know like those Banderists from Ukraine, but not that evil.
National symbols of Belarus (white-red-white flag and Pahonia) are mostly associated with them today, sadly.
Hope Lukashenka will one day come back to national symbols and reintroduce Belarusian language just to troll them
