A couple reasons. For one, I enjoy Japanese culture beyond weeaboo anime shit and want to read Jap literature and enjoy Jap film in it's native language.
Another reason is that I'm interested in working in Asia at least part of my life. I'm studying to become a nurse practitioner and Japan is the first country in Asia to begin adopting the profession. Given Asia's aging population, I think advance practice nursing is on the cusp of a boom over there, and I'd love to be involved in helping to foster that development. Working with Japan's programs first is the best way to get my foot in the door.
I'm also interested in learning Chinese and strategies I use to teach myself Japanese will be helpful for learning Chinese. For example, strategies I use to learn Kanji will be directly useful for learning Chinese, and by learning Kanji I'll make the right connections in my brain to be easily able to recognize Hanzi. Plus, Chinese grammar is simple as fuck, so if I can work my way around Japanese I'm confident written Chinese will be easy in comparison.
Of course, Japanese doesn't help at all with Chinese pronunciation, but still, learning Japanese will teach plenty of applicable skills to learning other languages.

I want to lean both. I want to learn Japanese more because I'm more interested in Japan. I'm just saying it can help me with hanzi later, just like Chinese could have helped me with Kanji if I learned Chinese first. Sorry if it came off that I'm just learning Japanese in some twisted attempt to make Chinese easier. I just think knowing Kanji will help with hanzi almost as an accident.
Plus, the skills I learn from teaching myself Japanese will be really helpful with any other language I want to learn.
