Japan is a slightly different case for a few reasons
1) Japan is 124 miles from the nearest mainland point of Asia, whereas the UK is about 12 miles from mainland Europe. This meant Japan stayed more isolated historically.
2) Japan is 1.5x larger and much more populated than the UK. This has allowed Japan to be more self-sufficient and it means you had a large enough domestic market to prosper with limited interaction with the mainland
In contrast, the UK's smaller size and population, and closer proximity to the mainland, has fostered a more outgoing culture among British people. We've always tried to mess around on the European mainland, taking territory there until we lost it. Then over several hundred years from the 16th century to today, we've had a literal global presence. Japan had an empire for a very short period but when that ended, it withdrew once again. Japan can prosper without being too involved with the mainland.
