Humanity is still taking baby steps when it comes to terraforming. You can reclaim land from the desert (using vegetation) but it's a very slow process right now.
Sounds like a nice project for the future. However, with their immigration policy a population explosion is fairly unlikely so I don't think it's worth it. Got lots of more arable land to harness in Russia, Canada and even the US should we run low.
If it wasn't for America cheating (Alaska+Hawaii) I think we'd be bigger.

There are more a couple more towns with populations of like 10,000 - but those are all the majors ones; between me to Brisbane to Gold Coast there's a lot of urban areas and between Newcastle and Sydney there's a lot of urban areas but between the rest there's nothing but very small country towns with a couple of hundred people.

don think your pic is correct mate, hardly any of Australia is strict arid. I drove from Perth to Alice to Adelaide and its bushes and trees all the way, arid is moisture-less and doesn't support all but the most basic plants if at all. I cant recall a single time in 6 months in Australia where there weren't plants, there is a tiny arid desert there east of the centre i thnk though.
