Actually Taiwan has a different pinyin system as well as a slightly softer type of mandarin as compared to the mainland. Also, Taiwan uses traditional characters so there is ample reason to put Taiwan in a separate category.
Just to clarify, Hong Kong and Macau uses Cantonese.

Yes for the most part we can understand each other but I think it's easier for people who learnt traditional Chinese to understand simplified. Are you going to learn mandarin/putonghua? And by continental do you mean mainland?
