I don't think Russia wants to push their borders that far. They DO (feel like they) need to push their borders though. Their coming demographic problem means that they won't be able to field an army as large as the one that they have now, for the foreseeable future. It's likely that they will try to push their borders to the mountainous choke-points. Holding this territory will allow them to defend their Western borders, even more effectively, with even fewer troops.
