I've read the Quran a couple times (courted some muslim girls on and off over the years, made attempts to understand and be respectful) and yeah it has similar outdated stuff like the bible but most people on both sides don't pay attention to those parts any more.

It's not that different. More codified generally, and they actually care what the text says. There's also a huge amount of "scholarly" work that deals with really mundane issues...this stems from the fact that the Quran is (for them) the literal word of god and therefore everything counts, unlike the bible, which is a mishmash. Islam is more comparable to judaism, in that it has specific regulations that you have to follow. Rules on prayer, dietary requirements and legal codes etc. Islam goes beyond what any other religion prescribes in the extent of the Sharia and the legal code that Muslims should live their lives behind. Christendom and Political Christianity was not prescribed in the bible, it arose out of having a common religion. An islamic caliphate is prescribed in the Quran.
Christianity simply has nowhere near the regulations required of its followers. For all the ire Protestantism gets, a similar reform movement would not be possible in islam. Because there are fundamentals to islam that simply have to be followed. You can be a "Bad muslim" and not follow them, but any islamic school that suggests you don't need to pray or eat halal or women do not have to dress conservatively would immediately be disregarded by all other muslims.
Islam is a construct that includes a legal system, a political system, a social organization system and a faith system and these 4 parts cannot be separated from each other, they come as a package.

It has a very large body of hadith and secondary writings, on top of an equally giant pile of jurisprudence, argumentation, and interpretations, and then there's all of the history recorded of all of the sect splits, uprisings, dynastic rebellions, disputes, which often is wishy washy and hard to verify if you want to be historically rigorous with what actually happened and not just what each writer said. And all of that has it's own pile of interpretation and argumentation.
