This image is actually incorrect. It's not genetic modification that removes the seeds, it's a lack of genetic diversity. Bananas produced for sale are almost all of the exact same variety, the cavendish banana, and there's so little genetic diversity that they've all bred into becoming sterile. The only way to propagate them is vegitatively, that is taking a sample of the plant and growing it as a cutting.
They're thinking that in a few decades this variety will be wiped out by a disease it can't resist and they'll have to make the swap to a new variety yet again. This happened in the 50s. A banana variety called the gros michel was beset with a fungal epidemic, and they couldn't resist the disease so the variety just became commercially nonviable.
In 20 years bananas will taste completely different, is the take away from this.
