>You only open gifts and stuff on the 25th, right?

Yes, it is the custom in anglophone countries to open gifts on the morning on the 25th, although I understand that many countries open theirs on the evening of the 24th (and many countries share a main meal on this day too).

Fortunately, the Christmas period extends between now and the new year, so we don't have to worry overmuch about the exact dates of these things.

>>52574053
Tradition here is the meal and gifts on 24th.
Though personally we don't have the tree because it's kind of bothersome and having it in a flat it would just take up too much space but fortunately there are no small children here so we just don't care.
>>
>>52574053
Someone I know from Spain told me the other day they have a day in early January for the three wise men or something that they prioritise over Christmas.
>>
>>52574181

Yes, most of Europe does this. In fact, even our royal family (descended from Germans) celebrate this custom, although all ordinary Britishfolk celebrate these customs on the 25th of December and not on the 24th.

I am surprised that you don't bother with a tree, however. I live in a flat, and we always get a live tree each year (as does everybody I know).

>>52574189

They are most likely refering to the epiphany, which occurs on the 6th of January for many countries.

The main festivities of Christmas are celebrated by many Europeans on the 24th of December. The 25th is less important, but many festivities continue until this day nonetheless.
>>
>>52574301
For us the holiday should be about the family coming together, though that doesn't really happen when half of our relatives live in another country.
And the tree would just be standing there until the 6th Jan. so I don't really see a point in it.

Sometimes Japanese posters ask questions about how to use words or form sentences in English.

It's true that most native English speakers and even many non-native speakers can help them with these questions. I don't claim to hold any any special talent, only that I will help when I can.

As native speakers, we all understand how subtle differences in language can enhance the ability to be persuasive, to capture attention, to garner sympathy, to be concise and succint or to be wordy and verbose. Even if we cannot express it in concise and accurate terms, it is a latent ability that we employ on a daily basis.

Grammar and punctuation are secondary. They facilitate meaning, but they usually do not create it.

We must always do our best to help the Japanese posters when they ask questions.

It's safe to assume that any British poster is a monolingual English speaker, since native Celtic and Brythonic languages are spoken by a small (<5%) ,minority of the population.

normally saying Happy holidays is a way to wish happiness for all 3 holidays at this part of the year, Christmas, New Year and i don''t how to call it in english but that one with the three kings that gave presents to jesus

>so you are english?

Personally? Yes, I am English. I am only half English by ethnicity though since my father is Scottish, but I am English by birth and by nationality nonetheless. You can assume that any British poster is English though and be correct 80% of the time.
>>
>>52579422
Sometimes it becomes a controversial issue. Most people don't care when you say "Merry Christmas", though. Like in Japan, even people who are not Christian celebrate Christmas. Christmas is about money, not Jesus.
>>
>>52579422
It's the "politically correct" thing to say so someone who is not Christian or culturally Christian won't be offended. People say both, depending on the individual.

I wish people merry Christmas, since I personally wouldn't be offended if someone wished me a happy Hanukkah or some other holiday I don't celebrate.

The answer to both of those questions depends entirely on you.

How much time per day are you willing to devote to studying? Will you use it outside of studies? Do you find that you are adept at learning languages in general?

What would be "worth it" for you?

You must ask yourself these questions.
>>
>>52579584
10 years
even then you might be "fluent" but not "native" level
it's probably not worth it, you should only learn the language if that's what you enjoy spending your free time on
>>
>>52579584
>how long does it take to learn japanese from 0 to fluent as native english speaker
about 2000-4000 hours of dedicated study (to have a certain fluency)
>also is it worth it if you dont plan on living in japan for longer than 2 years
that's something you have to decide yourself
>>
>>52579495
You gotta be careful with assumptions sometimes though. I live in Wales and some Welsh people can be pretty touchy about being mistaken for an English person. Although I guess that doesn't matter too much on a place like 4chan.
>>
>>52579584
i don't know, but some good years to get to the point of being able to live there without trouble, i heard stuf on around 10 years, but some intensive courses dictated by japan foundation are made for 6 years
im learning because i want to study diplomacy and it would be a cool country to be sent to, if i do get sent there i could very well end up living there the whole duration of my career

I have not inherited any accent from my father, since I have lived in England my entire life. I always used to prononce trousers as "troosers" when I was younger, but upon correction and gentle mocking from my peers, I have ceased to do that.

Many people find Scottish accents to be quite pleasant and melodic though. You are not alone in that regard.

here the cities are far from each other since we are a large country with only 40M inhabitants, so there are many easily recognizable accents, my mother is from a different province than the one i has been raised at and she never lost her accent, at the same time i have moved quite a bit and it looks like im some kind of accents sponge, right now im a mess of Cordobes, Salteno, Mendocino y Porteno
Everyone always points it up as something likeable, apparently it sounds nice.

"Depressing" is the wrong word. Mastery of the written language certaintly requires more effort than most (phonetic) European languages using the Latin (or Cyrillic) alpgabets, but learning the kanji and the uses of hiragani and katakana are important to understanding Japanese cultures. It behooves you to gain an understanding of the Japanese writing system becfore you can properly understand their language, and thus their culture and therefore them.
>>
>>52579949
You're not alone. I get depressed every time I think of just how many more I need to learn before I can actually read the things I want to read.

In the UK, the cities are close to one another, but nonetheless, the dialects are often distinct and very different. I have lived in the same city my entire life (London) so of course I have just learnt to speak how everyon in my local area does.

You should always play your accent to your advantage though. Mine means nothing where I live, but in America, people seem to like it very much. Playing to our strengths is how we gain advantages in life.
