last year this time was like -30.
>warmest winter in recorded history
>new year's forecast plus degrees and rain
At least we have a little snow on the ground and below 0... But it hasnt been colder than -17 all damn winter where I live.

We had one night of -2 already in late November, last year first frost took until Dec 27 to arrive
>>52566901
no it wasn't. last year was also a green christmas for most. it wasn't this fucking warm but it wasn't freezing either
>>52566056
>tfw almost 40
>tfw never seen snow in my entire life
What is life
>>52567037
I mean heat with low humidity isn't even that bad (we had +40 one day in July but with only 30% rH), I'd take that over constant tropical +30 and 100% rH
>>52566949
Think I'll start a business at Kilpisjärvi abd spend winters there if this shit keeps up
I like the weather, it's not too cold.
Also tomorrow it's gonna be a hot pot time.
>>52566901
According to FMI you guys in Quebec will have +9 tomorrow.
Jesus Christ that is warm for Canada.

El Niño is just wrecking our weather. happened before like 20 years ago but even then it wasn't this fucking warm
so far since November it's basically been warm and wet with around freezing temps at night. pretty much what our spring weather is like
>>52566056
So now you know orthodox Christmas is the only real Christmas.

No, pic related was pretty perfect desu, nothing better than getting out of the pool when it's almost 40 and a slight breeze cools you off
>>52567055
no it wasn't dude... around beginning of January 2015 it was like -40/-30 or something in quebec. I remember because I was in japan at the time and laughing at my friend who was stuck in montreal in that shit weather.
>75 degrees in virginia
>Normally it's like 40 degrees at most
>>52567211

I actually forgot you guys had that and for a second there I was really concerned for whoever lived there.
>>52567196
I don't mind ice cold weather, where the snow won't melt the next morning.
I despise transition weather, all rainy, muddy, but still cold.
Disgusting
>>52567384
maybe in the northern parts but everywhere else it was just hovering around freezing. it wasn't till January that winter started kicking in then February was cold as fuck

>>52567293
it's like we skipped winter and went straight to spring...
man my plants are gonna hate that...
I wonder if the wildlife is losing its shit over whether or not to hibernate right now?
>>52567269
Cthulhu's body heat. He's resurfacing. Judgement is coming
>>52566145
>it will only get warmer
Actually not. The increased melting of the north pole can cool the oceans in the northern hemisphere, causing short term cooling.
t. Actually understand climate change on more than a meme level
>tfw northeast
>heard we're supposed to get fucking 65°f on christmas
>tfw no white christmas
>tfw we probably won't get any snow at all until mid to late february
God damnit, I just want a change of scenery. This whole barren trees/shitton of rain bulllshit sucks.
Fuck El Nino.
I feel bad for everybody living in some hot shithole.
t. Arizonan
>live in an arid desert area
>still get snow
>tfw Deep South so no snow but constant comfy raining
>>52567507
middle of January it should cool down some. here in Ontario a lot of winter wheat was planted this year and if the weather keeps going like this there could be a lot of lost crops, glad i didn't plant any
>>52567915
>winter wheat
Isn't that the usual way to plant it? At least here it is so, regardless of cold/mild winter, adds some nice green to our otherwise brown landscape
>>52568144
well there is spring wheat but winter wheat tends to produce better. around here there's not usually a lot planted because when other crops(mainly corn and soy) are finished being harvested there's usually a pretty narrow window to get wheat planted due to rain making the fields too wet or winter setting in.
this year with the warm temperatures and lack of rain a lot of wheat was planted, possibly even a record. the problem is that if the wheat grows too much before the ground freezes it can actually cause a lot of it to die off once it actually does freeze. another issue is this month we've been getting quite a bit of rain which is also causing some to die. once spring comes farmers have to check their fields and decide if the crop is healthy enough to bring a decent harvest or if they should just replant it with something else.
>>52568673
Ah makes sense, here the winter wheat is usually planted late September and harvested late July, so enough of time inbetween (indeed because it yields more than the summer variety), we don't crop rotate much do it's usually the same field
>>52566056
Worst new year is on the way.
>>52566056
God weeps
>>52568889
here it's generally a corn and soy rotation. some don't bother with wheat at all and some try to get it into the rotation whenever weather permits
i wanted to get some wheat in this year but after seeing how much others were planting i decided against it. i have a feeling the market will be flooded next year and the prices will be shit so i didn't really want to risk it. already got fucked bad enough this year so really can't afford another shitty year
>>52569252
(Not living off farming but parts of my extended family do so I'm informed a little)
Sad thing here is that fruit prices have gone down so much over the years that it's not even worse the pesticides you'd have to spray on them any more right now.
We used to have lots of orchards around here in the past, but since the 90s, they're gradually getting replaced by grain monocultures left and right, but this will fuck shit up in the long run as nothing is stopping wind erosion any more, our relatively dry climate doesn't help here either.
Some fields are already lying 10-15cm lower than the dirt paths beside them
>>52569677
>worse
*worth
Fuck it, had a beer too much
>>52566056
warmest christmas i can remember
>>52567341
Var?
>>52569677
problem with farming in general these days is that we really can't compete with the rest of the world. Asia and South America can produce a lot more and for a lot less so it keeps prices low.
this year i had all soy beans and ended up with a shitty crop due to drought. 130ish acres and my cost for fuel, seed, fertilizer, and chemicals were about $26k while my crop was only worth $37k so i got a $11k profit. this year was also bad for repairs which cost me about $20k so i actually lost $9k
next year i'll have closer to 300 acres which should give me a little extra income to help with a profit but i only have enough money to buy maybe half the seed. i'll end up having to borrow to cover the extra seed and all of my fertilizer, fuel, chemicals, cost of living and any extra expenses that pop up. with that interest adding up i'm probably going to end up getting fucked but there's really nothing i can do to avoid it at this point
>starts raining
>then turns to snow
>then back to rain
>slush everywhere
>>52571000
Yeah, EU protectionism keeps us afloat here, else other regions would outcompete us and sell us their cheap shit. But is it really a bad thing? Do our staple foods really have to come from 10000km away, shipped in stinking tankers just because it'd be overall 1 cent/ton cheaper, but full of pesticides that have been banned here decades ago?
In this case I can't understand anti-protectionists who are very often also environmentalists
But wow you really need a lot it seems, farmers in my family have about 10ha (multiply by ~4 to get acres) in wine and about 15ha in grains, sugar beets etc but it still feeds (financially) about 4 people (2 grandparents and partially aunt's family of 4 which I only count half)
Shit's crazy, here is summer and today it snowed 350km from here, we had 25ºc average since spring, 30ºc at most and only one day.
Last year by now we had several days with 42ºc in here.
>>52571659
we have some subsidies here to help keep prices under control but nothing even close to what the EU does.
like i said this was a shitty year. during August when soy beans fill the pods we had no rain so the seeds were all like 1/4 of the size. for a single person the 130 acres i had could make a living but for a family you need at least 300 and you're really at the mercy of the weather
the funny thing here is that much of what we grow is shipped off to the US or China where it gets processed into whatever then we end up buying it back. the same thing happens with our oil, we ship it to the US where it's refined then we buy back the finished products. really fucking stupid way of doing things but it is what it is i guess
i don't actually own any of the land, it's split between my grandfather and his brother. they retired about 15 years ago and since then the land has been rented out. it took me 12 years of begging for my grandfather to finally let me farm it so i've really only been at it 3 years. i have the benefit of using their old equipment so i didn't have to borrow hundreds of thousands just to get started but i do still have to pay them rent for the land.
