ITT: Post traditional food from your city/town/state that the rest of your country does not eat

Pic related, I live in a small rural town and we have a tradition of eating Giant Weta once a year for Maori New Year. We take the kids to collect a bunch of them in the weeks leading up to it. We usually manage a few dozen, and keep them alive until the holiday.

Traditionally we would fry them normally, but we recently got our hands on a deep fryer. Since then we've deep fried them in various batter.

W-what does it taste like?
>>
>>52563715
Texture is crunchy with a juicy/soft inside.

It's an acquired taste, I think. The weta inside tastes sort of prawny I think, best thing I can think of to compare.
>>
>>52563828
do you like to eat it? like, you eat many of those things or just 1 and you're done?
>>
>>52563927
They taste pretty good, but I wouldn't want to have it often. It has like... A sort of after taste, hard to explain. It's a nice traditional food I think.

We normally have several each. They are quite difficult to collect though, so we can't have too many. Luckily they are not endangered where we live so we aren't threatening them in anyway. We've been considering raising them domestically as it's pretty simple, but we've never gotten around to it.
>>
>>52563658
Look at the ass of that thing.
Once fried. Does it still has that disgusting goo shit that insects with big butts have inside??
>>
>>52563658
That's a really africa tier tradition but then again, it's at least something.
>>
>>52565397
Yeah sort of. It's not so much goo as it is just mushy shit though.

>>52565819
To be fair most people here also beat their kids and are alcoholics. It's a pretty African tier place.

If you consider the UK as "the rest of the country". Its something unique to us, similar to a doughnut but incredibly soft inside. I'd kill for one right now

We also have black butter. You boil cider for 2 days until it is reduced by half, then add Apple, lemon, liquorice, sugar and spices.

OP is shitposting, or grossly misinformed.
Giant Weta are endangered and rare. Even where there is somewhat successful conservation efforts, it would be outlandish to capture several and eat them.

OP could of course be talking about more 'regular' weta species.. Which are more numerous. Still, I don't know if they'd be common enough to have a tradition of capturing and eating "several each" once a year.

Stinky tofu.
Although it isn't one of a kind, our city has THE most famous stinky tofu vendors.
Smells like feet but the taste is great.

I found a weta on a school camp once. I took it to my cabin but my teacher made me put it back, so I released it into the river :)
>>
>>52574350
On our school trips to this park we'd always catch crayfish in the river. It's funny there were so many when I was 5, by the time I was 12 they were rare as fuck to find.
