Prior to the unification, Italy was divided in many countries. In the North, the most relevant ones were the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia and the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia(part of the Austrohungarian empire), while the South was governed by the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. The first two were modern industrialized countries, while the latter was effectively feudal and could be considered third world by the standards of that age. After the unification, the government did very little for developing the South, and mafia started to grew, effectively replacing the government in most areas. Fast forward to the '50, the economic miracle happens and Italy starts to grow, but the government realizes that it can't defeat mafia, and you know what they say, if you can't beat them, join them. We finally had some actual industry, but in return we became even more of a corrupted shithole. Long story short, mafia and being neglected from the government are the reason why we're literally slav tier.
