Wesley Allan Dodd molested dozens of children in the Seattle area throughout the 1980s and got away with a slap on the wrist most of the time. Eventually his fantasies became more and more sadistic and he wrote in his diary of wanting to mutilate young boys and eat them.
He molested 11 and 9 year old Cole and William Neer in a Seattle park in October 1989 and stabbed them to death before fleeing. A manhunt was launched to find the killer of the boys, but proved unsuccessful. Dodd laid low for two months, then struck back when he kidnapped 4 year old Lee Iseli and molested the boy in his apartment for hours, taking photographs and jotting down the details in his diary. Eventually he strangled Iseli and hung him in his closet. After taking a photo of the strung-up child, he placed him in garbage bags and dumped him near a riverside, where the body was found.
Dodd was eventually caught trying to abduct a 5 year old boy from a movie theater. He confessed to police all of the graphic details of his crimes (they noted that Dodd seemed to gain pleasure from reliving them) and was quickly tried and found guilty of first degree murder and child abuse. Police found Dodd's diary in his apartment with photos of Lee Iseli, the boy's underwear, and a torture rack he intended to use with his next victim. Dodd was sentenced to death, saying that he frankly deserved it and if he wasn't stopped and he got out of jail, he'd resume molesting kids. He was hanged in 1993, the first person executed in Washington since 1965.

John Evander Couey kidnapped 9 year old Jessica Lunsford from her mobile home in Pinellas County, Florida in February 2005. A manhunt was launched to find the girl, but quickly centered on Couey, a convicted sex offender who was residing across the street from Lunsford in his half-sister's mobile home.
Couey had a decades-long rap sheet going back to 1978 when he was only 18 and entered the bedroom of a sleeping 10 year old girl and attempted to passionately kiss her. He spent less than two years in jail out of a 10 year sentence. In 1991, he was arrested after accusations of molesting a 5 year old girl, but again received only minimal punishment. Couey had numerous other arrests for assault and battery, drug charges, burglary, and indecent exposure.
Police questioned Couey about Jessica Lunsford's disappearance, to which he quickly confessed and showed them where he buried her body in a trash bag. He said that he kidnapped the girl from her bedroom, took her to his half-sister's trailer, and had sex with her at least twice. Couey tied Lunsford up in a closet and kept her there at least three days before stuffing her in trash bags and burying her alive outside the trailer where she asphyxiated.
Couey was convicted and charged with kidnapping, sexual battery of a minor, and first-degree murder. He received the death penalty and the nationally-publicized case caused several states to pass stricter laws on the placement of sex offenders. Couey died in the Florida State Penitentiary in September 2009 of cancer.

Alejandro Avila kidnapped 5 year old Samantha Runnion outside her Stanton, California home in July 2002 by telling her he needed help finding his missing dog. Avila took Runnion in his car and drove off. Her friend Sarah Ahn ran inside and told what happened, starting a police manhunt.
Runnion's battered, nude body was found laying near a roadside. She had been raped with a foreign object, beaten, and strangled to death. Avila, a convicted sex offender, was arrested on suspicion of the crime. Police found child pornography on a computer he owned and a considerable amount of physical evidence tying him to Runnion's death, in particular his DNA underneath her fingernails. This corroborated with her friend's recollection that Runnion had frantically tried to fight her kidnapper and escape his grasp as he took her away in his car.
Avila was sentenced to death for the murder of Samantha Runnion. As of 2015, he is still incarcerated in San Quentin's death row.

Jarred Harrell, an unemployed 24 year old man in Jacksonville, Florida, was charged with the October 2009 kidnapping and murder of 7 year old Somer Thompson.
The investigation began when Thompson went missing on the way to school one morning. Her partially nude body was discovered in the city dump. Police tied Harrell to the murder by DNA matching of semen stains found on the girl's clothing and when questioned, he confessed to the crime.
By Harrell's own account, it was essentially a crime of opportunity. He owned a dog that Thompson often stopped to pet on her way to school. The dog was with family members the day of the murder and not present at his house, however the girl apparently came by like she always did to pet it and then walked into the house to ask where it was. Harrell claimed that Thompson became upset and panicky and that he grabbed, choked, and asphyxiated her. He said she became unconscious, after which he placed her in a box and tossed her in the dumpster outside a restaurant he'd formerly worked at. When police asked why he'd removed her pants and underwear, he said he could not remember the reason for it and had a mental blackout.
Harrell also admitted to having a child pornography addiction and had previously fondled a 5 year old girl. Coworkers also remembered him as having a disturbing habit of making sexual comments about children and jokes about babies being killed and thrown in the trash. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder and sexual assault of Somer Thompson.
The house where Harrell had lived was purchased by the city of Jacksonville and used for training practice by the local fire department. Somer Thompson's mother Dienna, who angrily confronted Harrell during the trial, was given the opportunity to set fire to the house with a torch, something she described as "A great relief. I feel sick having to look at this place every time I drive by here."

Joseph Duncan was sentenced to death in 2007 for the brutal kidnapping and murder of several members of the Groene family of Coer D'Aline, Idaho.
Duncan had a lengthy history as a violent sex offender beginning at the age of 15 when he raped a 9 year old boy. By his own account, he had molested at least 13 boys by the time he was 16. He was suspected in the murders of two girls (Sammijo White and Carmen Cubias) and one boy (Anthony Martinez) in 1996-97 but not connected with those cases. On May 16, 2005, the bodies of Brenda Groene, her boyfriend, and her oldest son were discovered in Idaho. Her younger children, 10 year old Dylan and 8 year old Shasta, were missing. An Amber Alert was put out for the two children and eventually, Shasta Groene was spotted in a restaurant with Duncan where she simply walked away from him and told people what had happened. Duncan was promptly arrested and Groene provided police with a detailed account of her kidnapping.
She stated that Duncan broke into their home and took the entire family hostage at gunpoint. He eventually beat her mother, brother, and stepfather to death, although her and Dylan did not see this happen themselves. Duncan drove the two children around for some time to different campsites in Idaho where they were molested repeatedly. Dylan apparently got the worse treatment, as he had been beaten and killed with a shotgun blast to the head. Duncan also videotaped himself abusing the children, some of which was found on a computer he owned.

Alexander Nikolayevich Spesivtsev (Russian: Aлeкcaндp Hикoлaeвич Cпecивцeв) is a Russian man who was accused of torture and killing around 80 people and cannibalizing some of his victims. His mother, Ludmila, lured some of the victims into their apartment under different pretenses and went unnoticed due to her inconspicuous babushka appearance. She would dispose of the remains by throwing them into the Aba river late at night. Spesivtsev kept a diary detailing some of his crimes and did not deny his actions when captured. However, he confessed only to 19 murders and boasted with crimes, that couldn't be proven. In his house was found 82 complects of bloody clothes, near 40 jewelry items and some photos of unknown people, who possibly were his unproved victims. He was ruled insane by a court and committed to a psychiatric hospital, and had previously been confined to a mental institution for 3 years after torturing and killing his girlfriend. The only living witness, 15-year-old Olga Galtseva, was forced to eat soup made out of her friend. She died a day after being discovered.

Charles Rodman Campbell was born in 1954 in Hawaii but his parents soon moved to Washington. His alcoholic father violently beat him and his sister was born physically disabled. He began to accumulate a rap sheet from an early age and dropped out of high school.
Campbell married a 22 year old when he was 19, but was abusive and she filed for divorce while pregnant with their daughter. Shortly afterwards, one December afternoon in 1974, he attacked 23 year old Renae Wicklund while she was doing yardwork outside her home in the tiny hamlet of Clearview, Washington. Campbell demanded that she give him oral sex at knifepoint or he'd kill her infant daughter Shannah. Wicklund gave in, after which Campbell left and she immediately called police. Campbell was apprehended almost two years later and Wicklund testified at the trial along with her neighbor Barbara Hendrickson. Campbell was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
However, Campbell got out of jail on parole in 1981, less than 7 years. On April 14, 1982, Wicklund, who ran an accounting business out of her home, was sick with the flu and Barbara Hendrickson went over to check on her. After she failed to come back on time, her husband Don went to Wicklund's house and found Barbara, Renae, and 9 year old Shannah all dead with their throats slashed. He called police, who determined that Renae Wicklund had been savagely beaten to death and raped with a blunt instrument prior to having her throat cut. The other two had had their throats cut, but were not raped.
Don Hendrickson said that the culprit must have been Renae's assailant from 7 years earlier. Charles Campbell was arrested at the halfway house he was staying at and charged with first degree murder. At the trial later that year, he displayed an utter disdain for everything and would not discuss the murders or show the faintest bit of remorse. Campbell was sentenced to death.

It was alleged that he and other inmates were in cahoots with Roger Button, a homosexual prison counselor at the Monroe Reformatory who employed Campbell and other of his "pet" inmates to collect debts or beat up on inmates he didn't like while protecting those whom Button did like while also providing him with sexual favors. In exchange for this, Button covered up the prison infractions committed by Campbell and others.
While out on parole in 1981, Campbell became romantically involved with a female counselor who became pregnant and gave birth to his son. They visited him frequently during the time he spent on death row and Campbell's son eventually became a minister.
Less charmed by Campbell was his mother, who said he'd always been trouble since childhood and she figured he was beyond help and would end up on death row inevitably (she died prior to his execution and did not live to see it).

Christopher Wilder made headlines for his cross-country kidnapping, assault, and murder of teenage girls and young women in 1984. The Australian-born Wilder had been accused in the gang rape of a girl on a Sydney beach in the early 60s and received electroshock therapy to curb his violent sexual urges, however the treatment likely made him worse.
Wilder married in 1968, but his wife filed for divorce in a week after deciding that his sadistic fetishes did not appeal to her. Shortly afterwards, he was suspected in the murder of a teenage girl and decided to flee to America, where he began a career in Florida as a contractor. With the real estate market in 1970s Florida booming, Wilder made a comfortable living for himself and maintained a fine home in Boynton Beach and a stable of sports cars. He was arrested several times over the years on accusations of sexual misconduct or trying to kidnap women.
In 1982, Wilder was arrested while visiting his parents in Australia after he forced two 15 year old girls to pose nude at knifepoint. They posted his bail and he was able to return to Florida, but ultimately never faced a jury for that incident.
In early 1984, Rosario Gonzalez, a model who appeared at a racing event in Miami that Wilder participated in, disappeared. A few weeks later, his ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Kenyon also vanished, followed by a 15 year old girl named Colleen Osborn. Apparently Wilder became nervous that the police would suspect him, so he decided to go out with a bang. He withdrew most of his savings from the bank and fled the area to begin the murder spree to end all murder sprees. He kidnapped, murdered, and dumped 21 year old Terry Ferguson after abducting her outside a shopping mall. Next, he kidnapped 19 year old Linda Grover and took her to a hotel room where he raped and subjected her to various kinky sex tortures. Grover managed to lock herself in the bathroom and screamed frantically for help, whereupon Wilder fled.
Wilder continued his cross-country trek, kidnapping 23 year old Terry Logan of Beaumont, Texas. Her body was later found by the roadside. Then he kidnapped 21 year old Suzanne Logan in Kansas, raped, and stabbed her to death. His next victim was 18 year old Sheryl Bonaventura in Grand Junction, Colorado. He held her for two days prior to shooting and stabbing her to death. Wilder then arrived in Las Vegas where he abducted 17 year old Michele Korfman. Her body was found almost two months later by the roadside.
Wilder then abducted 19 year old Tina Marie Risico in Torrance, California. Despite raping and abusing her repeatedly, he apparently thought she was submissive enough to keep around, so decided to use her as bait to draw in other victims. By this time, Wilder was on the FBI's Most Wanted Fugitives list. In Merrillville, Indiana, Wilder kidnapped, raped, and stabbed 16 year old Dawnette Wilt. He left her by the roadside and fled, assuming she was dead, however she lived and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Wilder then abducted Elizabeth Dodge, a 33 year old Sunday School teacher, shot her, and stole her Pontiac Firebird.
Wilder and Risico reached Boston, where he gave her money, told her to buy a plane ticket back home to California, and drove off. He tried to abduct 19 year old Carol Hilbert in Massachusetts, but she escaped and told police. At this point, Wilder decided to make his way to the Canadian border on the hope that Canada would not extradite him to the US. While filling the Pontiac Firebird at a New Hampshire gas station, Wilder was spotted by state troopers who tried to confront him. He was carrying a loaded Magnum .357 and shot one of the officers (who survived after undergoing surgery) and then turned the gun on himself.
Wilder's confirmed death count is 8 victims, however he is suspected of at least 10 other murders of teenagers and young women.

In a lot of cases when someone is the victim of a crime, you're expected to shed huge giant tears for them and act like they were simply innocent victims of a monster and they didn't make any lapse of judgement or mistakes that could have led to shit going down.
