Anyway, it depends on your level of education.
Poor-class Brazilians don't seem to be able to understand much of PT-PT.
I'm a Lawyer, I can understand pretty much everything that a PT PT person says. Not that I think you need to be college educated for that though.
Also, worth noting is that, just like when you select ''English'' in many websites/language learning places, they are referring to US-English, the same happens with Portuguese. PT-BR is more disseminated.
I wouldn't recommend learning Portuguese though, it doesn't have as many uses as Spanish, and you should be able to understand some Portuguese if you know Spanish.
So unless you really like Portuguese for some reason, go for French or Spanish instead.
I'd say French is the hardest of the romance languages.

Anyway, learning a regional language in France is useless, apart from the autism and an interest in languages per se.
I say this while speaking occitan like my parents and grandparents, it is _never_ used by my parents and was only seldom used by my grand parents.
