They're not as close as Austrians or Dutch of course, language is a huge divider, but there's some sort of transition zone between our South-West and their North-East, some common Celtic, Roman and Frankish periods in history (which you can still partially see in architecture and viticulture), also genetics.
It's very much unlike our border to the Slavlands where there is a rather sharp barrier in all those aspects mentioned
