The habit is more a uniform worn out of tradition. Nuns can and will go out or perform their religious duties without wearing it. Even traditionally nuns and other christian women were not required to wear something covering the head all of the time, just while praying. The purpose of each are also different. Christian head covering was (theoretically) done as a sign of submission to god. Muslim head covering is done to show submission to god, AND to desexualize women and protect their purity.
Ultimately both are stupid religious non-sense with roots in sexism and subtle means of control, but they're very different in the extent, consequences, and execution.
