Canada's richer than most of the world, though, and countries which produce refugees can't be reasonably expected to accommodate them, so an extra 10,000 is acceptable in my eyes. The biggest problem originally was the timeline; 25,000 is fine—25,000 in a month is not. I'm glad pressure from other political personalities in the country convinced him to push the timelines back.

Yes, there are a lot of countries closer to Syria than Canada. Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, for instance, border Syria directly. It is those countries that Canada is admitting refugees from.
