Is the reason China and India have such huge populations because of how fertile their lands have been historically for agriculture?

Like, when you look at Russia and Canada, there are places it's impossible to live where as it's pretty much fair game to have a farm anywhere in India and China.

Or is there another reason these countries have over a billion people?

yes

both have two major river systems which is rare for relatively culturally unified areas

I don't know about India, but China has a huge population because of Mao. Mao has a policy of "In the event of a war with the USA, we'd win if we had a bigger population". This resulted in a huge population boom - people having as many kids as Irish catholic families.

We don't have 5 children families in non frozen parts either. No one actually has. These things are not related.

Ganges River Basin is the most fertile region on the entire planet. Also one of the most toxic and overpopulated.

Didn't China already have around 400 millon people back in 1900?

Historically, yes. There was a time when famine was not unknown and food-production to afford big population was the definition of a powerful Civilization. The previous century was the first time when nobody in the civilized world experienced famines. Before the Industrial Revolution, 80% of the population was dedicated to agriculture. Today less than 1% of the people in the US, for example, are dedicated to farming.

Before healthcare and pensions, your best guarantee of retirement was having many babies. A good number of them didn't even reach adulthood (even among rich families), but the surviving ones would take care of you during the final years of your life. Today, nothing is more expensive than having a child.

Just under 400M is an accepted estimate. In 1950 it had 600 million. Then in 2015 it has almost 1.5 billion. An extra 700 million people in 65 years is ridiculous, especially when most of that is concentrated in a handful of cities.

China developed advanced farming techniques early in its history which allowed them to support such a large population

yeap. its called stealing land of north vietnamese and use its fertility and climate humidity to grow rise in most ineffective w as possible so China lived in permanent starvation until dead of Mao.

there is something about chinese and its diaspora that would be considered strange phenomenon by modern western countries.
The difference between the wests and chinese lies in their tendencies to have more offspring when they having more wealth and securities, so they won't stop breeding.
a chinese family came into my neighborhood as family of 5, now after 28 years, they are family of 15, quite amazing

Yes,but unlike India most of China is uninhabitable ,about 60% of the land is used for agricultural purposes .while China just uses 15%.

also India always had a huge population , being a older civilization and all . Being bordered by the Himalayas protected the inner kingdoms from invasions from invaders.

>India
>Older civilization than China

Simply not true. Depending on how you define "civilization" then at best they are as old as each other (But that's really fucking stretching it). China is older than India by far.
