Hey anons. Just wondering. I have read several things about your country recently and became intrigued. First of all Russian is a highly used language in Latvia. According to recent stats almost 1/4 of citizens use it at home. Even ethnic Latvians.
There was a referendum recently about banning Russian from schools by 2018 in the name of preserving Latvian.
Do you guys speak Russian too? Who's a Latvian native?
What do you think about this referendum?

I'm Latvian. I mean I have a Russian family name as my paternal grandfather was Russian, but I never met him. I speak pretty good Russian as I was taught it at school and I use it when talking to Russians, but not at home.
Preserving Latvian culture is the only good thing the country does (albeit not very well). The constitution starts off by saying that that is the purpose of the country. It seems like a lost fight considering how globalization is ramping up, but seing as my taxes pay for it, I'd rather the corrupt, incompetent state be my kind of corrupt, incompetent state.
I voted no on referendum.

I kind of glossed over your post there assuming you had the right idea about the referendum.
It wasn't about banning Russian from schools. It was about making Russian a state language. I voted against that. The bit about 'banning' Russian is something you might have picked up from RT or wherever.
State sponsored schools have to teach something like 75% of the curriculum in state language. That wasn't put to a referendum, just decided by the government a long time ago and does not mean banning the use of the language by the pupils or the teachers. Russian state media likes to call that 'banning Russian', which I'd say is a misrepresentation.

I learned English in the same way. While you may not hear very sophisticated vocabulary when watching cartoons, you do get a head start with the language at a young age and as time goes on your vocabulary expands.

I meant initially.
We're a small country with maybe 2 television channels broadcasting entertaining shows, so not a whole lot of English language television and cinema gets translated into Latvian and practically none of the translated stuff ends up being easily dowloadable on a whim, so pretty much every American or British movie or television show you want to watch, you have to watch in English.
Also the television shows that do get translated don't get dubbed. They get what I guess is called a voice-over, where the original English dialogue can still be heard.
When I was in school I watched a whole lot of Discovery Channel which had a Russian voice-over.
