I don't think Ireland has THE most depressing history of the world, just that we wallow in it more than anyone else. We invented a whole genre of folk music that was about whining and the levels of Catholic guilt we retain even now is at a critical level. I mean, last year we found a mass grave of babies in a septic tank, and everyone just sorta shrugged and said "ah sure, t'was a different time...in the 60s". Any other country would have looked back in horror.
We're grief hawks. We have a culture of heroes, amazing poetry and writing, stunning illuminated manuscripts and medieval craftsmanship that recorded history, ancient neolithic mystery and wonder, and a gorgeous landscape (when the weather is nice).
