How languages with no genders work?
>>
>>52325870
I could ask the same question about languages with genders.
It confuses the fuck out of me.
>>
>>52325870
>speaking a language with no genders
>not knowing how it works
>>
>>52325870
Like English. Gendered words do not even make sense because they are not logical.
>>
>>52325870
Like English. Which means barely.
>>
>>52326059
pretty much this

the slovene word for dog is male gendered, the russian one is female

and it's the same language group

It's totally subjective how the genders are set up, unless it's about people
>>
Here in Sweden a lot of people use Hen. It was created by feminists to be gender neutral. People adopted it cause it easier than saying he/she.
>>
It's what we should strive for, shitlord.
>>
>>52326034
I see, we start to learn how one or other gender word sound just at the begging of school. So it's pretty normal to me.
>>
Thank god English has no gendered nouns. Gender and gender agreement are such retarded and arbitrary rules of languages.
>>
>>52326139
>the russian one is female
Wrong, you idiot.
>>
>>52326179
Does Spanish has it?
>>
>>52326144
so progressive
>>
>>52326179
Yep, especially when you learn many languages. Das Auto, el coche, Maшинa. One thing that has fucking all genders depending on who you ask.
>>
>>52325870
Objects don't need a gender and if we are talking about actual animals then we have names for them like cow or bull. If not we just call the animal she or he.
>>
>>52326260
Yeah. It's not a problem for me since I already know the language, but it's a completely useless feature... basically what this guy said >>52326383
>>
Why and how did English drop gendered nouns? Old English had 'em but it looks like they suddenly changed their grammar
>>
>>52326249
as far as I understand coбaкa is female and if you want to specifically say it's a male dog, you say пec
>>
>>52326059
Yeah this one always irked me:
German:
Boy - Der Junge (male)
Girl - Die Madchen (neutral)
>>
>>52326472
Modern English is pretty much a pidgin.
>>
>>52326472
http://blog.dictionary.com/oldenglishgender/

>However, in northern England in the 1100s, grammatical gender disappeared. Historical linguists aren’t entirely sure why this happened, but Professor Anne Curzan suggests that genders were lost because of the language mixing that went on in Northern England during that time. Between the 700s and the 1000s, there were Vikings invading northern England where peasants lived. The two groups spoke different languages: Old English and Old Norse. However, it is quite likely that many people were bilingual and fluent in both languages. Both Old English and Old Norse had gender, but sometimes their genders contradicted each other. In order to simplify communication, gendered nouns simply disappeared.

>It was created by feminists to be gender neutral.
Are you memeing me boy?
>>
Eh, not so difficult.

99.999% nouns ending in "-a" are feminine
99.999% nouns ending in "-o" are male
It's a little difficult for nouns ending in "-e", but not so much
>>
>>52326448
I don't know man, for me it's sounds richer and more interesting.
>>
>>52326472
It was because there was a mix of danes, germans, anglos... They spoke nearly the same language, but genders where really confusing, so they decided to use just one article to name all objects. They simplified English.

I think something like that happens with turks in Germany.
>>
>>52326558
Interesting, thank you.
>>
>>52326486
You mean Das Mädchen, Das is neutral, Die is feminine but yeah
>>
>>52325870
>he asked, in English
>>
>>52326144
Trolling aside, is it really `popular?
>>
>>52326486
boy - tisti fant (male)
girl - tisto dekle (neutral)(archaic)

same in slovene desu
>>
>>52326538
Pidgins usually have limited vicab and English is overkill because we just borrow words from everywhere.
>>
>>52326599
same in spanish, even if we have the "-or" ones, which can be femenine or masculine, without a rule
>>
>>52326662
Oh shit yeah I fugged it up.
>>
>his language gives inanimate objects genders
literal retards
>>
>>52326844
This. Sometimes people to it for fun though, for example the clock is feminine, so is a boat, but a fish would always be masculine etc.
>>
>>52326753
English is a developed pidgin because it adopted so much vocabulary from anywhere it could be found.
>>
>>52326604
Although spanish is easier with gender shit.

Except a few exception, you can know the gender of a word by its termination.

Words ended with -o or -e, for example, are masculine. Words ended with -a are feminine.

I've heard that you must learn every single german word with its particular gender. That's hell.
>>
>>52326844
>his language doesn't even grammatically differentiate between two, some or many of something

yup, retards
>>
>tfw his language is the only romance one with 3 genders

kill me already
>>
>>52326844
>His language is so primitive, his undeveloped mind can't comprehend concepts that are even slightly complex.
>>
>>52326923
>a
>a couple of
>a few of
>a lot of
>>
>>52326383
It's not something you "need", they're just there. IIRC it comes from (pre-organized religion) animist indigenous cults, people believed every object had a soul and radicated in language.
>>
>>52326949
I can't learn any other European languages because of the gender rules. I found Chinese easier than European languages.
>>
>>52326989
>grammatically

having only singular and plural always reminded me of those weird SA cultures that don't know how to count above 3
>>
>>52327003
> IIRC it comes from (pre-organized religion) animist indigenous cults, people believed every object had a soul and radicated in language

Amazing, I did not know that
>>
>>52326904
We have a little bit of inequality here
Usually words ending with -s are masculine and most of the other words ending -a -e -i are feminine.
>I've heard that you must learn every single german word with its particular gender.
That's fucked up, I'm sure there must be some pattern.
>>
>>52326946
That's ok, everyone still thinks Spanish is the easiest romance language to learn
>>
>>52327107
It's asturian, spanish has only 2 genders. But it is also easy.
>>
>>52326949
>implying anglos will ever have a need to learn more than 1 language
I used to know both german and spanish but ive forgotten almost all the vocabulary from disuse
>>
>>52326923

You guys really kept dualis?

Prepare your anus
>>
>>52327077

I think it's actually the opposite. Have special grammatical category for a number you're good at counting to. Srsly looks archaic to me.
>>
>>52327107
Spanish is a pain in the ass desu. I can easily guess enough French words and understand full sentences, but I find more difficult doing the same with Spanish. Catalan is somehow a whole different story tho.

And even then you fuck up. Mixing "your" and "you're", seriously? Of course English doesn't have genders, your brains struggle to keep up with it as it is.
>>
>>52327298
I can understand 50% of italian but only 10% of French, and only in its written form. Are you from the north or something?
>>
>>52327309
Your English grammar is incorrect, one should not begin a sentence with a connecting word such as and or with an adjective such as mixing.
>>
>>52327306
I love how it sounds, really. I don't think it fits in the north of Europe, thought.

Near San Marino. Not exactly your "french-influenced" north. Our dialect has a strong common substrate from the celtic times but it's only useful when it comes to spoken French. I use Italian as reference
>>
>>52326144
not really worth it

I think Finnish would be nicer with he/she
>>

I don't know man, for me it sounds too clear and it has too many vowels to be there.

>>
>>52327232
Could any German confirm, please?
>>
>>52327823
there is no strict gender pattern in german except some trends such as most nouns ending in -e are going to be feminine while most ending in -ig and -ant will be masculine. im sure there are exceptions though

Boats and ships are always female. Is it like this in every European language?
>>
>>52327823
>>52327964
Diminutives are always neutral. Hence why it's "Das Mädchen", because Mädchen originally was the diminutive of Magd.

>>

no. 99.999999% you would be perfectly unterstood.

here's something funny for you guys:
Die See = The sea
Der See = Lake
>>
>>52328215
Why is ship masculine?
>>
>>52328147
the words barco and navio are both male gendered, but that doesn't stop people from calling their boats using female names and pronouns
>>
>>52328330

What if he's Scottish or Welsh, you English dog?
>>
>>52328406
Would 'the seas' also be Die See?
>>
>>52327436
>Should not begin with and
That, my dear anon is a perspective that is not universaly by any measure, among the user-base of English. Lots of people do this in normal speech, including native speakers, and it further appears in writing.
>>
There are cases when grammatical gender differs from actual object's gender.
Let's say "avis" (sheep, female one) is a female it's self, but the grammatical gender of the word is masculine.

Men nu ljuger du...
>>
>>52328415
I fucked up, both of the words are masculine because they end in -as and -is.
>>
>>52328465
Die See only means Sea in singular which makes sense cause when you talk about "die Seen" it means the lakes. when you mean multiple seas you'd say something like die Meere.
>>
>>52328147
La barca -> the boat
El barco -> the ship
>>
>>52328147
boat is masculine
ship is masculine
fregate is feminine
vessel is masculine
barge is feminine
shuttle is feminine
>>
>>52327559
lol why
everyone uses "it" anyway
>>
>>52328147
In Romanian (a romance language), 'vapor', the word for ship, is neuter.
>>
>>52328855
>>52328804
>>52328625
>>52328955
Interesting. I assumed they would all have female genders.
>>
here are some words which can be of any gender:
der, die, das Bookmark
der, die, das Joghurt
der, die, das Triangel

Also in german 46% of the substantives are femini, 34 masculin and 20 neutral.
>>
>>52329015
Out of curiosity: why?
>>
>>52328543

Zoophile homosexual's dream!
>>
>>52328855

>>

Because ships and boats in English are almost always referred to as "she".
>>

>>
>>52325870
Gender isn't something too important in a language.
The absence and inclusion of it isn't very important.

Gender, in term of gendered pronouns could be useful but isn't that necessary. Gendered occupations exist in Estonian. F.e: Sõbranna/sõbratar - female friend, sõber - friend, näitlejanna - actress, näitleja - actor

Grammatical gender/noun classes just includes more ways of conjugating words, and we already have 40+ of these. Although Estonian only has irregular conjugation in 4 forms + plurals (Nominative, genitive, partitive, illative)
>>
>>52327147
Actually...

Remeber "lo"?

That's our "Neutral" gender m8
>>
>>52330484
Actually about 30-40 since there are 26 main declensions and each declension has 1-5 subdeclensions

Mixed up declension and conjugation, nouns declend.
