I would imagine it must be very uncommon for anyone who has gone through the British school system not to know. You get swimming lessons as part of the PE course as well as survivalist advice, everyone in my school could swim already anyway so it just became a case of if some of us really wanted that swim a mile certificate. Swimed in competition level for about twelve years. It probably helped creating the autistic and anti-social person that I am today. I would rather play football but my parents obliged me to train.
