If I'm walking into someone's house and it is tiled or wooden floors, I'll generally leave my shoes on. If it is carpet, I'll take mine off and leave them at the front door.
Or if I'm coming home, I'll usually go to my room, take my shoes off, and put on my slippers for dicking about the housing in.
My sister doesn't like people wearing shoes in her house, so we don't. My mother doesn't mind having shoes on and usually has hers on, so we leave them on.
