I don't understand why the Chinese and Japanese languages still use hanzi/kanji. Why doesn't Japanese just use the kanas and Chinese use pinyin?

Pinyin is only used for westerners. Plus, Chinese character pronunciations are similar enough that having separate characters for each word actually makes understanding context easier.
Besides, once you have an established writing system and a cunt with a population of more than a hundred million, you can't exactly remove an entire aspect of the written language.

I speak a lot less Chinese than I do Japanese, I think this may actually be the reason. Chinese words seem to have fewer syllables. I think Japanese could get by using just the kanas, but Chinese would easily become unintelligible.
Then again, Chinese people can't see the hanzi when they speak and listen, so with context I still think pinyin alone would work.
Plus pinyin lets you put spaces in sentences. Maybe it's just the American in me, but I feel like this is much much much easier
