War usually means improvement of technologies, they want better weapons, defenses etc and when the war's over those technologies can be used for peaceful things. But Africans lacked natural ressources like iron, stones etc so even with their (numerous) wars they were kind of stuck during times of peace

Problem was that they had no idea how to obtain those resources. Mainly because lots of Africa is relatively flat.
Several tribes did have enough weaponry to hold off colonial invasions for a while, but it wasn't enough.
Personally I think that if the West had simply engaged in trade with them instead of full-on colonisation Africa wouldn't be a shithole today.

Probably but with the huge difference of power between the West and Africa when colonisations started it was bound to happen. Even if I don't approve it's obvious when confronted with tons of gold and two choices, pay for it or kill them easily and take it, they'll always take 2nd option
