Putin is smart. He's playing the long game. Russia won clay and has proven you didn't collapse without EU imports. You've instead hurt EU economies more. Ukraine is collapsing once again under their own corruption. They will collapse further once Norstream 2 is operational. In future a friendly Ukraine government will come to power and relations will be back to normal.

Russia has also redeemed itself internationally through fighting ISIS. American and NATO hypocrisy has been exposed wide open.

No ethnic cleansing, just Serbs returning form vacation. No one forced them to do it.
>>
>>52266820
I don't think they could have kicked you out. It's interesting what happened a few years earlier:

>The Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation – by which Russia rents its naval base at Sevastopol from the Ukrainian government – is so far-reaching in the rights it gives the Russians to exercise their military powers that it is seen by many in Ukraine to undermine the country's independence. In 2008 the Ukrainians said they would not renew the lease when it expired in 2017. But they buckled under the pressure of a gas-price hike and, in 2010, extended the Russian navy's lease until 2042.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/07/ukraine-russia-crimea-naval-base-tatars-explainer

So *by law* you had that base until 2042, and you could have used similar tactics to extend the lease again and again. If the Ukrainians were the aggressors against rightful Russian clay, then you could hit them back with much less damaging repercussions.
>>
>>52267000
You don't think that post-pro-US/EU coup that shit could have been ripped up? Agreements are just agreements and ultimately it's up to the government of the time to honour them.
>>
>>52267174
It's a treaty, breaking treaties can have grave consequences. Yes they COULD have just ripped it up, but in doing that they would be giving Russia some justification in taking back Crimea. It would be Ukraine clearly in the wrong and much harder for the international community to sanction Russia.

Besides, the naval base at Sevastapol had a strong Russian military presence. The Russian Black Sea Fleet was based there. There was a garrison in the base.

Ukraine couldn't have attempted a takeover without things getting very messy indeed, and they couldn't withstand a counter-attack from Russia into Crimea.

In 2-3 years the saudis will be bankrupt and Putin will have his Iranian friends start a civil war there. This fucks over Russia's most aggressive rival, while ensuring that the entire mideast (sans Israel) becomes a Russian satellite state. Then Moscow controls half the world's oil supply.

I don't think Putin's move changed anything in that department.

Actually the Kiev regime repeatedly said they would revoke Russia's right to Crimea in February and early March 2014.

It was actually Yakunovch selling Crimea for another 10 years in exchange for oil that turned Maidan from a small protest over the rejection of EU trade, to a full blown civil revolt.

Maybe..... All I remember was talk of how Putin is a dictator, gay hater, and Sochi would be a terror filled shithole with no snow.

>oil
Putin has no control of oil prices. Crimea happened in March. Oil prices peaked nearly 3 months later when OPEC announced a market protecting strategy.

The proxy war with Ukraine has been done since February.
The economy is down 4%. In tatters is Ukraine with a 18% loss.

>useless patch of land
You think Putin is an idiot? He knew damn well what Crimea is worth and what it would cost. That useless patch of land had the Russian mediterranean navy stationed in it, 6 million ethnic Russians, and keeps Ukraine out of NATO.

When oil begins to rise again, and Russia helps defeat ISIS, and negotiates a peace treaty in Syria. Russia will be back.
Oil has nothing to do with Ukraine.
>>
>>52269737
But why would Poland want Dumbass? If anything they carve out the western bit. Lvov and all that.
>>
>>52269749
No they would not. The Kiev regime said it would revoke Yakunovch treaty's. Especially that one.

Putin could bitch all he wants but America would not help him. Who in politics wants Russia's navy in the black sea and mediterranean?
>>
>>52269839

That's like Canada deciding not to trade with America. They are a natural trade partner, and y'all definitely did not support sanctioning Russian oil oddly enough. I wonder why.
>>
>>52269944
>US & Canada
The situation is not even remotely comparable, although I understand how you could not see that. Let's just say that Russia had some peculiar business practices, and we had them too, thanks to our soviet heritage, and sanctions hit those people specifically. The less business those people do the better it is for us.
>>
>>52260941

>>
>>52270019
It's not like sanctions have an effect on those people. The Russian economy going downhill does.

But they'll be back. Your country will continue dying out. You'll never be as wealthy as Western Europe. You'll live a miserable and meek life under the clouds.
But oh man you'll get back against Russia. Cuz Russia is evil and you are good.

Not in the traditional sense, but yes. Smugglers, tax evaders and so on. On top of that we were never equal trade partners with Russia. It was a completely one sided relationship with them slapping us with various sanctions multiple times per year. Cutting them off like this is forcing people to reorient and look for trader partners in stable markets, instead of dealing with Ivans, hoping they'll be sober and sane tomorrow.

There are Ukrainians here. Most of them would speak Russian though. Even in Kiev, I used to spot mistakes obvious even to me in Ukrainian.

Anyway, I don't feel like looking for people IRL for that purpose specifically. I thought I would just read a couple of pages now and then, do some small talk etc. I don't have time for a language club or something on a regular basis. But a dozen or so guys I've been following tended to post that /b grade shit, so instead of arguing with them I just stopped reading. I think only one of them remained, he posts about math and Linux kernel patchsets, mostly in English.

I just watch The Big Bang Theory in Ukrainian instead. Funny as hell but doesn't improve my spelling.
>>

I'd say I see things improving since the nineties. This year I've been to Penza, SPb, then that village not far from Nizhniy Novgorod, garbage pickup is (mostly) there. It's going to take a lot of time to make it all look nice and be comfortable, but we're working on it.

I think there's something in russian psyche about Crimea.Despite the rest of the front crumbling at an insane pace, you fought like rabid dogs to defend it in ww2, axis casualties were horrendous trying to overcome natural obstacle after natural obstacle by foot because tanks and airplane meant nothing in that natural fortress of a peninsula. Had to resort to giant siege cannons and old-school frontal assaults to break the last sieges.

The fact that you got it back in an almost bloodless fight against the Ukrainians is kinds genius desu. You just went a bit too far with Eastern Ukraine.

Ever since the old days, you guys give in to the government. It's late but you'll have to do it sooner or later and actually take control of the government to make it work for you, not you work for the government.

E.g. Catherine II "gifted" privileges to your nobles out of her own "good will", while at the PLC the king had to put it in writing that the nobles have their rights or he wouldn't become a king.

Putin is getting a little desperate for attention. He knows that no matter who wins the next US election, the entire world's eyes will be on them for the next couple of years. Most of the candidates who have a chance, are also skeptical of the middle eastern wars. It's another thing completely if the next President will be able to essentially pull out of the region or not.

But either way, the economy has gone to shit, and that would have happened regardless of the West's sanctions, albeit slowly. Russian space program has been out of the news for years. They have never been big on exporting their "culture" to other regions, partially also because their economy isn't as strong as Western nations.

Affecting the politics of the middle east is the only way Putin thinks Russia will stay relevant in the next decade.
