This is the gist of it. Look, I'm not going to sugarcoat it: we got fucked by farmers in holes. We also fucked an entire country in to the ground.
The US is caught in a state of limbo about it, because we did not lose nor did we win.
We were not defeated by the enemy forces; we had more victories than losses.
That does not however translate in to a strategic victory. Those are tactical victories. Our missions were accomplished but the overall objective was a failure.
The Viet Nam war stings the US because even though we're adept at fucking with foreign governments, all we could do with South Viet Nam was keep it from collapsing.
Keep in mind a lot of vitriolic old men say we lost because they think we should've dropped the bomb, and many say we won because we didn't. It's a really complicated issue that can be summed up in, "results inconclusive".
We did lose the War of 1812, though.
