Back in the day the government thought it would be a good idea to take natives out of the wilderness and teach them to act like white people. They did this by setting up schools run by the Catholic, Anglican, and United churches which would teach them English/French and basically how to integrate with the rest of Canada while destroying their own cultural practises and language.
These schools ended up being really shitty places for the kids who got sent there because the government didn't give a fuck and allowed a lot of physical and sexual abuse to take place, something like 4,000 kids died overall and the last school didn't shut down until the 1990s.

My grandpa was in a residential school who was constantly abused for simply speaking our language. Alot of the elders that i have grew up with have went to residential schools and the common view is; that it was hell.
Prior to the Missionaries coming to our homes, we were doing pretty well with our way of life. It was simple, it was fun. We were happy even though we had nothing in comparison of the 'civil world' which would make us appear "poor" to you. But that didnt matter because we had no concept of wealth or greed. We just wanted to be left in peace with our way of life.
We didnt just become depressed for no reason. We were depressed for our loss of life. The elders of today got into alcoholism back then because they got abused first hand which lead them into depression. They didnt know if they should continue our cultural practices or continue being forced to Assimilate into the western world which lead to the stereotype of natives being alcoholics you have today.
