You have a point, however unless you live at 3000m high in the Alps, you are never really that far from a bigger city. French roads grid is very dense and even the emptiest departments aren't cut off.
The USA are much bigger so living in a small village in the middle of Montana is probably more of a problem than in France. Basically you can live comfy in the countryside and still work like 1h away, where you'll have friends etc
