You had some Jews like Benjamin Disraeli who essentially just gave up any of their identity and fully assimilated into the surrounding culture, but if everyone did that, there wouldn't be any Jews left at all. So then Zionism was started to create a modern, secularized Jewish nationalism (that also had a strong socialist flavor to it).
