this may sound shocking to monolingual speakers, but part of being proficient in another language means pronouncing its phonemes correctly as well as using the proper stress.
not just lazily using your native language's pronunciations when speaking another language because that's,you know... wrong. People don't speak with a British or American or whatever accent, they're trying to speak the way the language is meant to be spoken

It's actually quite strange how few non-native speakers try to lose their accent totally.
I mean, compared to the amount of Americans and Brits that put enormous emphasis on mimicking the native accent of languages that they learn.
I mean, some do go to classes to lose their accent, but mostly they just die having their original accent and their kids just grow up having an American accent.
