Christmas here has always been strange. All the carols and songs playing are about a white christmas. A Christmas tree is so ill suited to summer weather yet we all use them. Santa Claus is supposed to be wearing woolen clothing and riding a snow sleigh in the middle of summer, making it even harder to lie to the kids. Being a British derived culture, we have all their Christmas traditions which are all suited for colder weather. Any attempt to introduce "New Zealand Christmas" traditions celebrating the summer conditions inevitably ends up being forced and cringeworthy.
At least you can have the Turkey al fresco and dine outside. It's nicer to spend the time with your family outdoors instead of locked outside, but that's probably the only advantage.
