What was so different about Celtic Christianity that incensed Pope Adrian IV to allow the Normans to invade Ireland?
Obviously politics was at play, since the only English pope in history conveniently found a way to give his King claim over Ireland.
But there had to be some difference between the Catholicism on the continent, and the Catholicism practiced in Ireland/Scotland for this to be an issue.

Well, it's based on a thousand things "we" New Worlders usually don't care about, but the Old Worlders do. As you mentioned, blood and culture are two of them... but there are more, and the fact the family lived in the same place for generation after generation is part of their identity.
In the end, "we" are stuck into groups that bear no nationality. You aren't Irish, but you aren't "American number 4539834" either. Odds are you probably don't behave like, say, a German-American or an Italian-American.
