In the US "Asian" means the squinty eyed kind. Racist as fuck way of explaining it, but that is what you mean when you say Asian in United States. If an Indian or a Pakistani said they were "Asian" here they would be met with strange looks. It is just how it is here. Our definition of the word is what it is. Languages and dialects don't always make any fucking sense, too fucking bad.
In the US an Indian would be Indian and that's it. Honestly, that division makes more sense if you want to consider Europe "separate", since Europe is arguably a "subcontinent" just like India.

I think of it ethnically/racially rather than geographically. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are big enough and have large enough population that they warrant their own label, not to mention the substantial differences in physical appearance.
Labelling them simply 'Asians' seems to me to reflect a kind of old-world approach, like that everything that isn't European is 'Oriental'.
