You used to be pretty much fine for anything under $1,000, didn't have to be declared or anything. The government here only just brought in GST for imports, but I don't even know if it applies to most things. Shopkeepers kept bitching and moaning how they were losing business, and the state governments were moaning that they weren't getting the GST (our sales tax is collected by the federal government, then distributed to the state governments).
There was some talk about the government would have to negotiate with each supplier, so I'm guessing it'll only really be on larger suppliers now, like Amazon.
But I haven't bought anything from overseas since last year when I got my phone from Hong Kong; back then there was no tax, duty, declaration or anything.
