Protestant churches can be gaudy, Catholic churches can be very plain. Same goes for Orthodox.

You will find elements that are fairly exclusive to certain groups (eg you probably won't find a crucifix in a baptist church, you won't find an iconostasis outside of eastern orthodox/eastern catholic churches, etc) but you can't make a call between Catholic and Protestant just by looking at the gold.
