I worked in China for a few months. I thought it was odd.
I was a consultant for a government company trying to open up relations with US universities and I was also trying to forge relationships and cooperation with Chinese Universities. There were a couple of us, but I was the youngest on the team.
Dealing with Industry.
They in general, went all out. 5 star hotels, every meal was over the top and insane. We spent more time being tourist than discussing business (fyi Shoalin temple is an amusement park). I was never left alone, they assigned people to escort me, these people would not let me go off by myself ever.
One of the more interesting things with Industry though was we went out to dinner one night, just the team, our handler, and driver. The driver joined us for dinner but seemed to have more authority than the employee with a Masters degree who was guarding us. It seem to be because of his age.
In contrast to the University, we were completely left alone and spent our time in what I though were perfectly normal hotels. But what was really odd was the age and seniority still took a ton of priority. I was treated like an undergraduate and wouldn't be told anything about what was going on (even though I am a Doctorate). They would have undergraduates offer to take me to the town during meetings, instead of me going to the meetings.
Also, all the drinking. Holy shit. Chinese suck at making good booze but love to get drunk.
