I'm under the impression that most white Americans whose families have been here a long time are of German ancestry. So for example, my famiy is one of those "Irish" families, and I started hangingout with a "German" white person and the food they cooked at home was totally different from what I grew up with. Some families are super Americanized and some families have cultural quirks that have carried over from their grandparents. It's just a minorly interesting thing you can except to find out about anyone that you meet.
