New York, a very average state in terms of land area is about 1/4th the size of France.

You couldn't be more wrong. For most of the pre-civil war period, Northern and Southern political power was balanced -- quite deliberately. Neither side for the longest time wanted to rock the boat over the issue of slavery; the real point of contention was whether slavery would expand in the west. Even then, balance was attempted to be kept. Most Presidents up to that point completely ignored Slavery, so as to keep the balance (and voters). Lincoln didn't originally want to end slavery, only stop its expansion in the west. When he was elected, some southerners threw a hissy fit or not getting their way for once. I same some because secession was not a unanimous decision in many states or among southerner. Jefferson Davis only accepted his presidency reluctantly, due in part to a feeling of obligation to do so, for example. Another example is the fact that Virginia didn't join the CSA until months after the deep south did, and it really could have gone either way whether it would joined or stayed.
