A good portion of the US has little to no good pizza, just shitty chains (pizza hut, papa Johns, little Caesars, etc.), greasy slop shops, and frozen pizza's that are pretty much what you're thinking of. Where I'm from there's at least 5 good shops in my town alone, not to mention within a 10 min drive in any direction, and every one has a whole bunch of super good "specialty" pizza's (white pizza with ricotta, spinach, sun-dried tomato, and garlic is GOAT). Pepperoni/cheese are really only for parties where you have to appease everyone or people who suck
