Tell me about New York City,

If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere

So, it's hard to get by there then.

The only city in America.
>>
apparently its named after some guy called York, and not the city York in England, despite most cities in that area being named after English cities
>>
>>51986904
True. Walk around during the night, there are homeless people sleeping everywhere.
>>
>>51987237
Homeless people in US? But it is the richtest country in the world
>>
>>51987853
Capitalist propaganda. They are all poor. The clothes are loaned from costume shops to display as if they are rich when tourists visit. The oranges are made of cardboard!
>>
>>51987237
It has lots of hobos :S

>>51987928
I may be going next year. They better put on a good performance.

It's across the country and I heard it smells like pee

It's only 2:22 pm there so you might have a difficult time finding actual jew Yorkers to give you their experiences/advice
>>
Why does it have the scyscrapers?
>>
>>51988290
I have an 80's fixation, plus, you know, out of respect.
>>
>>51986660
London just worse.
>>
>>51986660
lame
>>
It's fucking amazing.
>>
>>51988360
I...I haven't been to London either. My wife adores New York and thinks we should go there for our next holiday.

I've always had a distaste for Yanks, so I am hoping to learn some things, maybe be more tolerant.
>>
I like it. Modern architecture, you can find almost anything, and it has an accomplished feel to it
>>
>>51988467
>find almost anything

That sounds pretty cool and beyond fun. I've heard that the park in the middle is massive.
>>
>>51987853
Mentally Ill and drug addicts desu. We aren't allowed to throw nutjobs in asylums without their permission.

>smells like pee
When its really hot in the summer crowded places in Manhattan do because if you leave a bar or restaurant and don't live in the area public urination is the only option.
>>
>>51988193
>>51988862
Everywhere else smells like diesel fumes and garbage.
>>
>>51988418
>I...I haven't been to London either.
What the fuck
>>
>>51988418
If you've always had a distaste for Americans going to the city with all sorts ( bad and good) of Americans might reinforce a bit of it. At least you're going into it with an open mind.
>>
>>51986660
The people there have shitty personalities and are extremely extroverted so they have no problem with calling a random stranger that didn't provoke them anyway a faggot
>>
>>51986660
Like I'm Brooklyn and work in Midtown Manhattan ask me anything.
>>
>>51988973
I'm a Glaswegian, I'm poor and it's very far away. I'd love to go one day. Maybe once I get a full-time job.

>>51989002
Well, values and history wise, we are different. Going to an entirely different culture will be a real adventure.

And to be fair, I've met many Americans, but they've all been Californians.
>>
>>51989280
How much should I tip?
Does tipping percentage vary based upon what I'm having - a higher percentage for a meal than for buying something in a shop?
Is it true that you tip everywhere?
I've heard portions are big, would places assume that I am not used to large portions or that I don't like their food if it is obvious that I', a foreigner?
What's cool to do or see that may not be in guides?
What do you think the best eatery is?
>>
Magic, tragic, New York man
something something frying pan.
>>
>>51989295
Ahh, Scottish, that's fair enough.
>>
>>51989453
For Restaurants and Bars 15 to 20% is normal. You could leave any amount though. Meal quality has nothing to do with it, its solely based on quality of service. Tip cabbies and people who shine your shoes or cut your hair. Don't tip people in shops or restaurants where you order at a counter (I.e. no one is waiting on you). Fuck the people at coffee places they think they deserve a tip and put out a jar but they deserve nothing.

Pretty different than any other place in the US
>>
>>51989453
Portion depends on the restaurant some places its too much but they will wrap up any extra. I'd check on yelp regarding portions.
>>
>>51989453
What do you like to eat? There is pretty much everything here. There is even a kind of little Britain.
For enteartainment it depends on what you like. The Met is a cool museum, Central Park us nice when the weather is good. I avoid touristy places like Time Square. There are a ton of art galleries/museums.

I was honestly surprised at how big it was when I first visited. Seriously, man. When I was in the car looking at the city, it seemed like the entire horizon was taken up by buildings. They also have big ass rats that come out during the night. Seriously, man. When I was in the car looking at the city, it seemed like the entire horizon was taken up by big ass rats.

I'm fascinated by New York.
I love how much of a personality of its own it has. It's a beautiful place, where everything can be found at any time, a city that never turns off, where people from all over the world flock to, being a center of everything important in the US, including the arts and the banking.
I know this is /int/, so many people would bitch at me for saying this, but I do love how many people of all cultures there are there. Nothing is abnormal. All kinds of people are there, and you'll surely find a crowd of your own. Hell, I had coxinhas in Little Brazil for God's sake. Yet, no matter how different the people there are from each other, they always have the unique experience of life in New York binding them together and forming a sense of kinship to each other. Yeah, I'm a sucker for the whole NY lifestyle.
We have São Paulo in Brazil, which is bigger and more populated than New York (also like twice as violent and has favelas surrounding it haha oops), that gives off a similar feeling, and I dig it as well.
>>
>>51993073
I'm not sure why New York seems to to foster that mentality, but I would suspect that it has something to do with the city's reputation
