There is more to the EU than the Euro and Schengen. A lot more.
The UK benefits by being inside because it can influence the rules of the Single Market, outside it can't do that. The UK is one of the most populated EU member states, has the 2nd largest economy and is predicted to have the largest economy in a decade or so. That = influence. Not influence over the Euro, but influence over the trading rules that matter to us. Indeed the UK was a key player in the creation of the Single Market itself.
Why should we be involved in projects like the Euro or abolish passport controls when we don't want to be? There's nothing wrong with being in the EU for the things that are important to us. We get our influence over rules, and in return we pay our fee (which actually isn't much money for the UK)

Well the Treaty of Westphalia to Waterloo (1648 - 1815) did see France strong, mostly because of the Sun King. But for much of that period it was vying for supremacy with the Habsburgs. It wasn't dominate over Europe

We are in the EU because it's good for the UK economy. That's literally it. Pic related proves my point (we joined in 1973).
The UK doesn't care about any grand designs of a "European Project", idealism or continental hegemony that other countries seem to harbour ideas about.
We are members because in a pragmatic sense it's good for us. The rest of the EU tolerates us because we provide a big chunk of the funding for the EU budget. It is purely transactional.
