It's college, not Sweden. The students come to this country eagerly for the educational opportunities (and there are quite a few more here than anywhere in Europe...for starts, you're never permanently locked out of academia over a test you bombed in high school.)

You literally cannot graduate from basic physics without being able to understand application. As long as the exam question is not "state the basic formulas for constant acceleration motion" (and it's most likely not...hell, most of my CC physics classes slapped formulas like that on a little sheet at the back), you will have to "apply" what you have learned in some way.

The awards are from researches made by the students. Not from the education. You can get someone from Benin with a great project and give him the opportunity to actually do his research, that doesn't mean your education is great(tough it has an impact).
The critsicsm is valid. I'm not saying the USA doesn't have some of the best universities in the world, i'm saying that specific ranking is questionable.

Yes, but keep in mind that's Harvard. There's also nothing saying that what you did over in China even has to follow you here. You could go to another school(most people who fuck up in highschool here go to CC), do well there, then Harvard or some other school might be more willing to actually take you in.
As long as you have something demonstrating that you're not a bad student anymore, you get another chance.
