What's the story behind YOUR flag, /int/?
The Mexican flag was, like many others, inspired by the flag of France after the Revolution. The colors were taken from the army standard of the pro-Independence army way back in early 19th century. Later the significance was assigned to each of the colors, but that has changed through the years and it doesn't really matter what they mean anymore.
The centerpiece on the flag is the national coat of arms, which comes directly from the Aztec Empire foundation legend. The Aztecs had been commanded by their god to wander around till they found an eagle atop of a nopal eating a serpent. They did find this eagle, right in the middle of a lake, so they built their city , Tenochtitlán, right on top of that lake. That city would later become Mexico City after the Conquista, the lake is long gone though.

The national colors were taken from the Lützow free corps which was a Prussian army volunteer force under General Lützow which achieved major battle victories in the defense against Napoleon. This army force used the colors for practical purposes because black dye was cheap, brass buttons were widely available and red was a standard decorative color for shoulder marks and pennants and such.
They were adopted into a flag by the country's first pro-nationalistic democractic academic fraternities which used them to demonstrate for a united Germany on several occasions in the first half of the 19th century following Napoleon's defeat, at the time already in horizontal stripes, however initially in a yellow-red-black combination, which was later banned by the governments of the German Confederation before the failed March revolutions of 1848/49, at which point they were ostantatiously reversed into black-red-yellow.
When Germany was finally united under Prussian leadership in 1871 however, this symbolism was ignored by the government in favor of a black, white and red flag honoring Prussia (black and white) and the Hanseatic League (white and red).
After having been blamed for starting and losing WW1, attempts were made to rebuild Germany as a democratic country called the Weimar Republic, adopting the black, red and gold in honor of the early democratic efforts of the 19th century. Mainly thanks to political turmoil and economic hardship, the Weimar Republic was short lived and soon succeeded by Nazi Germany which once again changed the flag to adhere to their own aesthetic obsession.
After WW2 both parts of seperated Germany once again adopted the black, red and gold - East Germany with a socialist insignia on top - from which point the flag still persists today.
tl;dr the colors go back to a Prussian general during the Napoleonic Wars, the symbolism goes back to the first democratic efforts of the first half of the 19th century and the failed March Revolutions.
