During the Crimean War there was a panic in Australia that the Russian Pacific Fleet would sail into Sydney Harbour and threaten to shell the city if we didnt pay them money. So there was a hasty rush to fortify the harbour with old cannons and bricks as well as begging to get the Brits to station ships here.

The first man to be killed by a train was a member of Parliament at the unveiling of the first ever train called the Rocket. William Huskisson had been at odds with the Duke of Wellington over parliamentary reform and had resigned from the cabinet years earlier. Both had been partly responsible for the growth of the British Empire. Husskisson sought to reconcile with the Duke and walked towards the train to meet him, but did not see the Rocket on the other track. As he held on to the door of the other train it swung out into the path of the Rocket approaching at about 5 miles per hour. The Rocket hit him and he went under the wheel, which crushed his legs causing him to die later that day.

The incident shocked many and caused certain towns to refuse having a train station built. For example, the town of Kingston upon Thames refused to have a station built initially causing a new station to be built a mile outside of town. This station eventually led to the creation of the town of Surbiton which remains the only high speed train station in the surrounding area.

Despite only about a quarter of its territory being alpine, Slovenia has over 150 Alpine mountain peaks that are over 2000 m tall.

63% of Slovenian territory is covered in forest, making Slovenia the third most forested country in Europe. Almost none of this forest predates the late 19th century.

Despite being Slavic, the territory of modern Slovenia had an 86% literacy rate in the year 1900.

Not new, always been like that.

Instead of you having to go to the courts to get the court documents or calling our IRS for tax records, there are third party actors that have already done this for you and stored all the data.

You can still demand the documents the normal way to get them faster.

How do you think the Sweden Yes stuff makes it on the Internet?

You can literally email the courts asking for the court documents (like the investigation) and they have no right to refuse you. If you want it printed, they have to print it out for you. You could just ask for a PDF in an email too.

>A high score (Masculine) on this dimension indicates that the society will be driven by competition, achievement and success, with success being defined by the winner / best in field – a value system that starts in school and continues throughout organisational life.

>A low score (Feminine) on the dimension means that the dominant values in society are caring for others and quality of life. A Feminine society is one where quality of life is the sign of success and standing out from the crowd is not admirable. The fundamental issue here is what motivates people, wanting to be the best (Masculine) or liking what you do (Feminine).

I posted about this once before, it's more /x/ related but I find it a nice strange thing having to do with Brazilian history.

In this place, called Chapada Diamantina, one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of Brazilian history came to be. In the 18th century, an expedition got lost trying to look for gold mines on the chapada region. They came back to the provincial capital 3 years later, with a written account of their travels.

In it, they describe coming across an ancient city where even the air felt different, with a black monolith in the middle of a great square, and a statue perched atop it, with a human figure pointing north. Ruined houses and temples that seemed connected by small tunnels to each other, forming a huge structure that could house tens of thousands of people. The city seemed abandoned for ages. No known indigenous Brazilian tribe got advanced enough as for to build such places.

Further expeditions never found this place, and the people reasonably thought the explorers made all of this up and discredited them. Their written account is in the National Library of Brazil under the name of Manuscript 512.

Continues...

In 1994, in an expedition inside the Xingu National Reservation, archaeologists discovered an isolated region with a very peculiar kind of ruin. It was different from any other place in that region. They uncovered different materials that weren't available in the region, and discovered that the people of this location were once settled farmers. The outline of the ruins suggests a close match to what is described in Manuscript 512, but at a further deterioration rate that could be explainable as the passing of a few centuries. This discovery is narrated in a book called The Lost City of Z.

The only weird thing is, the Xingu is deep in the Amazon, more than 2000km from the Chapada Diamantina. To this day, some people say the 18th century explorers were liars. Others say they could have got seriously lost and somehow reached the Xingu along their wandering years. Some, though, still believe that in the unexplored reaches of the Chapada there is an ancient city that is so far unexplained, and could uncover a whole new history of Brazil.

True, I myself came across this whole thing almost by chance. One thing that adds to the cryptic dimension of it is that the 18th century expedition copied some inscriptions they supposedly found - and it's strangely close to a kind of Chaldean Greek alphabet from antiquity. The explorers were simple, rough people so they couldn't have been educated in Greek. Here's a pic.

The russians manage to get fuck us out of our gold treasury in both world wars. In the first one we gave the then tsar our gold for safe keeping. In the second they took it as war reparations. And ther was a lot of because we didn't trust the reichsmark and we demanded payment of oil in gold fillings and wedding rings. Equate that with the fact that the German war machine run on Romanian oil. Antonescu wanted to either sink it or distribuite it among the population so the rumour says. Word is that was one of the reasons why the treacherous king deposed him

It's based off decisions and attitudes of managers and CEO's done in a survey.

The first survey was done solely within the company of IBM in 1971 because the guy worked for IBM and wanted to know how culture affects business within each country. Obviously It's been refined nowadays.

I'll give you some facts about California because we're not really the U.S.

> San Francisco population grew 180 times during the seven years of Goldrush (1848 - 1855), from about 200 to over 36,000

> The Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley, California recorded the hottest precisely-recorded temperature on earth at 134 °F (56.7 °C) on July 10, 1913.

> Both the highest point in the contiguous United States, Mt. Whitney (14,494 ft) and the lowest point in North American Continent (Badwater Basin in Death Valley) are in California and they are less than 100 miles apart!

> Hyperion, a coast redwood tree (Sequoia sempervirens) in the Redwood National Park, California, is the tallest living tree in the world at 115.54 meters (379.1 ft)

> California is the largest producer of almonds in the world. The Golden State produces over 80% of the global production of almonds!

> California is the first state ever to become a trillion dollar economy in gross state product. If California were a country, it would be the eighth largest economy in the world, with roughly the same GDP as Italy.
